A kind of savoury Bread and Butter Pudding. 🤔
Apparently this kind of thing is called a Strata, an American term and lends itself easily to other ingredients. Gosh, and it’s got proper measurements too, no cups. 😉
Bread and Cheese Pudding……Strata
Enough for 4
margarine for greasing
175g (6oz) stale white bread
100g (4oz) Cheddar cheese
3 eggs
450ml (¾ pint) milk
half a teaspoon of smooth mustard
salt and ground black pepper
2 medium tomatoes
quarter of a teaspoon of ground paprika
You’ll need an ovenproof dish, greased with margarine about 22 × 30cm
Heat your oven to 200°C, 400°F
Gas mark 6.
Method
Cut the slices into squares, about 2.5cm,
leaving the crust on. Put the bread into the dish.
Cut the cheese into 1cm (½/in) cubes, then scatter them evenly over the bread.
Break the eggs into a jug and beat them with a fork. Add the milk, mustard and a little salt and pepper, and whisk it.
Slowly pour the milky mixture over the bread and cheese. Make sure that all the pieces are coated with the mixture.
Leave the dish to stand for five minutes, so that the egg and milk mixture
is absorbed into the bread and it goes slightly soggy.
Sprinkle small pinches of paprika over the top.
Cut the tomatoes into slices and place
them on top of the bread and cheese.
Put the dish into the oven and bake it for 35 minutes, until the bread golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
